Jakarta governor's clemency pleas for Bali Nine pair fall on deaf ears as preparations continue

The clemency pleas of the governor of Jakarta have had no affect on Indonesia's preparations to execute Bali Nine drug smugglers Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran, with paramilitary police continuing to rehearse the transfer of the pair to their place of execution.

Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, known better as Ahok, used to work for Indonesian President Joko Widodo, and has called for him to commute drug smugglers' death sentences to life sentences in prison.

He said executions did not provide a deterrent to smugglers.

Despite Ahok saying earlier he believed Mr Widodo was considering all viewpoints, the fate of Chan and Sukumaran appears sealed.

Indonesian police have continued their preparations to transfer the pair to Nusa Kambangan.

On the island, the isolation cells for the pair have been prepared.

The transfer of the Bali Nine duo was delayed while facilities on Indonesia's "execution island" were prepared.

However, with Mr Widodo's unflinching adherence to his firm stance on drug smuggling, the pair appear doomed to make their final journey sooner rather than later.
