Jail time for brawling Sydney brothers

One of three brothers convicted of brawling with police outside their southwestern Sydney home has avoided a jail sentence but his siblings have not been so lucky.

The three Mehanna brothers - Adel, Hussain and Ali - were convicted last month over a fight that broke out with police outside their Bankstown home in the early hours of New Year's Day, 2013.

The police again found themselves embroiled in a battle with Mehanna family members in the foyer of the Downing Centre Local Court after the conviction was handed down in April.

But it was a different picture at Central Local Court on Wednesday as the trio were sentenced for numerous offences, including resisting arrest and affray.

The brothers were calm as the court heard how the situation between the Mehannas and police escalated when two officers went to their home in January to investigate reports of a domestic dispute.

The brothers, who were smoking on the front lawn, told police the dispute was a family matter and refused to let them inside.

Police eventually discovered there was no domestic violence, but back-up arrived.

Magistrate Darryl Pearce said the arrival of more officers didn't help ease tensions.

"Quite clearly the atmosphere was volatile, and when police arrived, they heightened it."

He said the then 18-year-old Ali made sexist comments toward a female constable and came toward another officer, who pushed the teen away.

Although the officers "were doing nothing more than their duty", Mr Pearce said at least three were assaulted during the affray.

The court heard that prior to the fight, Ali suffered from depression.

Mr Pearce accepted he had good prospects of rehabilitation and sentenced him to a 22-month suspended sentence.

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Hussain Mehanna was sentenced to a minimum of nine months' prison and ordered to undergo anger management counselling.

Adel Mehanna, 22, will spend at least four months in jail and will be eligible for parole in August.
