Muslim man who wed 14-year-old to be released in 13 days

A man who married a 14-year-old girl in Melbourne will spend only 13 more days behind bars.

The man, aged in his 30s, sobbed and shook as he was jailed for 18 months in the County Court of Victoria today.

The sentence allows his release after serving one year and given time already spent in custody, he will be freed in 13 days.

He must be of good behaviour for six months.

The man pleaded guilty to marrying an underage person, a charge carrying a maximum five years' jail, after wedding the girl during an Islamic ceremony at a Noble Park mosque in September 2016.

Footage of the wedding played during court proceedings shows a prominent Muslim marriage cleric marrying the girl in front of her mother.

It is the first prosecution in Australia under the federal-forced marriage laws since they were established in 2013.
