'It's raining fish': Outback Queensland family find tiny perch in puddles

As if heavy rain in drought-stricken outback Queensland wasn't thrilling enough, a family has been further surprised by the tiny fish they found in puddles on their property. 

After the much-needed rain fell yesterday, Tahnee Oakhill and her family ventured out to explore the muddy puddles on their cattle station, about 70km northwest of Winton.

Footage shows them picking small fish off their wet driveway, and placing them in nearby puddles.

Ms Oakhill said the experience was "surreal".

"The kids got a good little catch today – five or so. It was pretty surreal watching them walk around on a once droughted property in the guts of the Qld bush and scoop living fish out of mud puddles on the dirt road," she wrote on Facebook.

The local consensus was that the small fish were perch, Ms Oakhill said.

"My husband called us outside and I said, 'You've got to be joking'," she said.

"Then we spotted them just laying in the dirt and flip-flopping.

"We reckon they must have come from the sky – there are no creeks or no gullies around."

The town of Winton received 120mm of rain on Wednesday, making it the town's wettest March day since 1994.
