Ipswich teen battling heart defect awarded top marks in final exams

A Springfield boy stricken with a heart defect has battled his health condition and a heavy study load to receive one of the highest results in his final exams.

Springfield High student Jordan Hall was today awarded OP 2 in the Queensland Core Skills Test (QCS).

He’s among 53,000 students graduating as part of the 2017 cohort to receive their results online this morning.

The cohort marks the largest group ever to finish Year 12 in Queensland.

“It's an outstanding achievement to have almost every one of our young people actually finishing year 12,” QCAA Chief Executive Officer Chris Rider said.

West Moreton Anglican College graduate Joshua Smith is among a number of others to receive the highest rank, OP 1.

Now he has the luxury of being torn between two passions – music or science and maths.

“There is a lot of choices that I have to make now, now that I know I actually can do anything,” Joshua told 9NEWS.

More than 750 students around the state received an OP 1 today.

Not all, of course, scored as highly. However, those graduates left disappointed with their result are being reminded there's still plenty of options.

“There are other pathways that get you into uni, and of course there's all the pathways that get you into vocational education,” Queensland Minister for Education Grace Grace said.
