Ipsos poll points to Labor victory

Voters may not expect Bill Shorten to be the next prime minister but that's what looks set to happen if the latest Fairfax-Ipsos poll is anything to go by.

Just 17 per cent of those surveyed think the opposition leader can win on Saturday, according to a poll of 1377 voters this week.

But half of those surveyed intend to give Labor their first or second preference, putting Labor in the lead at 51-49.

The result represents a 4.5 per cent swing to Labor - enough to get Mr Shorten over the line.

That's despite six-in-10 voters saying they expected Malcolm Turnbull to remain in the top job.

The poll, published by Fairfax, also shows 27 per cent of voters still intend to back the Greens or minor parties and independents, despite being urged not to do so by Mr Turnbull.
