Penny Wong has revealed that having an "inside voice" is her secret for keeping cool and calm in the cut and thrust of federal politics.
"It's always good to have an inside voice and an outside voice," she told the Powerful Women in Politics Breakfast at the National Press Club on Wednesday.
Labor's Senate leader reflected on her previous appearance at the podium debating outspoken Liberal senator Cory Bernardi on gay marriage last year.

Her colleague senator Katy Gallagher was in disbelief at how she kept it together because Senator Bernardi had said "such crazy things".
"I said, `that's because you didn't hear my inside voice'," Senator Wong said.
