Inquiry sought into parliamentary attack

South Australia's attorney-general is seeking a privileges inquiry into claims by former Liberal leader Isobel Redmond about the state's electoral commissioner.

In parliament on May 20, she described Commissioner Kay Mousley as "utterly corrupt".

Attorney-General John Rau has written to Ms Redmond saying she had made a "most serious allegation" against an independent statutory officer.

He asked her to immediately provide him with full particulars in support of her allegations.

"I assume that I need not remind you of your reporting obligations under the Independent Commissioner Against Corruption Act 2012," he wrote.

In her reply, Ms Redmond supplied no details, but said: "I am pleased to advise that your assumption is absolutely correct: you need not remind me of my obligations under the Independent Commission Against Corruption Act, 2012".

Mr Rau has asked the speaker Michael Atkinson to rule on whether she has breached parliamentary privilege.

"I believe a member of this chamber has knowingly and deliberately misled this House," he said in Parliament on Tuesday.
