Police are searching for the driver of a silver sedan seen near where a man was fatally shot in Sydney's inner west.

The 36-year-old Bankstown man was found dying from multiple wounds on Dunmore Street, Croydon Park, at about 1.30am today.

Neighbours said they heard a series of gunshots in the area shortly before he was found.

Attempts to save him were unsuccessful.

Investigators are keen to identify a vehicle seen in the area about the time of the shooting.

It is described as a white or silver sedan with a rear louvre or spoiler, lowered suspension and a modified exhaust.

Detectives from Ashfield local area command and State Crime Command's Homicide Squad have formed Strike Force McQuillan to investigate the man's death.

A post mortem examination will be held this week to confirm the man's cause of death.
