Several brands of inaccurate pregnancy tests taken off the shelves

Batches of pregnancy kits have been taken off the shelves after the Therapeutic Goods Administration found some tests to be unreliable and inaccurate.

The review of all of the 38 human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) pregnancy self-test kits on the market showed some were "insensitive" to the hormone found in urine.

The TGA began testing devices after it received reports of three false negative results from a family planning clinic.

“Some devices were found not to work reliably and accurately and have either been corrected or removed from the market,” the TGA said in a statement.

It focused on kits claiming to detect extremely low levels of hCG in early pregnancy.

Levels of hCG rise rapidly in the weeks after conception.

Nine manufacturers voluntarily withdrew their tests from shelves after the review.

The remaining 27 were tested and five were found to be inaccurate.

“All affected batches were recalled from pharmacies,” the TGA said.

“An investigation by the sponsor revealed a manufacturing flaw, which was corrected and the corrected devices were found to pass in subsequent testing.”
