Immense waterslide with 360-degree loop to return to infamous US theme park

A US waterpark that once boasted a slide with a 360 degree vertical loop is looking to regain its star attraction, despite the fact that the original looping slide was shut down due to injuries and accidents.

New Jersey’s Action Park plans to house the Sky Caliber –  a 35-metre  slide that begins with a 12-metre vertical fall. The slide features a 360-degree vertical loop, and riders are encased in a protective capsule that prevents injury.

The slide includes an access panel in case a rider becomes stuck.

The ride will recall the park’s infamous Cannonball, which also featured a full loop. It was the site of a series of accidents that plagued the park from 1978 until 1996 when both park and slide were closed to the public.

The Sky Caliber’s designers say that it does not have the same safety problems as the cannonball.

“We've had a 100 percent success rate in our tests so far," Sky Turtle Technologies’ Adam Duze told the New York Daily News.

Mr Duze said the capsules mean that riders could not get stuck in the slide or fail to build speed the way they could in the Cannoball.

"We're just proud because a lot has changed in the past 30 years in terms of safety and design," he said. Despite the safety measures, Duze says the Sky Caliber is a thrilling experience.

“It's very quick and frightening," he said. “We're hoping to break the waterslide speed record."

"It's just good ole guts and glory, and a lot of fun.”
