Illegal ivory ornaments and jewellery have been found in Sydney following an investigation into an online trading company.

Following a tip-off from the International Fund for Animal Welfare, federal environment officers and police raided two locations in inner Sydney on Thursday.

It is alleged investigators uncovered $80,000 worth of ivory ornaments and jewellery.

Two people are being investigated and could face charges under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

The maximum penalty for wildlife trade offences is 10 years' jail and a $170,000 fine for individuals.

The federal Department of Environment said in a statement the operation was a good example of organisations and government working together to stop wildlife trafficking.
