Imports of the illicit drug ice are higher than last year, a Senate committee has been told.
So far this financial year, 2.9 tonnes of crystal methamphetamine have found their way into Australia, compared with 1.8 tonnes in the entire previous year, Customs chief Roman Quaedvlieg said on Monday.
Authorities had netted 65 kilograms of the drug concealed in a shipment of flatpack furniture, 100kg in kids' toys and 150kg in cardboard barrels, all from China, as well as a shipment of 879kg from Germany.
