I'm no rev-head bogan, says Ricky Muir

Australia's most unlikely petrolhead politician has dismissed perceptions he's a rev-head bogan.

And Australian Motoring Enthusiast Party senator Ricky Muir reckons he's no one-trick pony.

In a rare interview, the Victorian senator speaks about his first year in federal parliament and his non-motoring achievements, such as saving the renewable energy agency and the schoolkids bonus.

As a man more like the people, Senator Muir believes he brings fresh ideas to the table.

"In the very early days if I was to jump on Twitter there'd be a common thing about Ricky Muir being a rev-head bogan," he tells the Practical Motoring website.

"But that's the wrong perception."

However it's his passion for all things cars that takes precedence, as the senator rattles off various automotive legislation in parliament, discusses road safety, tolls and driver education, among other issues.

Senator Muir believes his election to federal parliament was no accident but happened because of public concerns over the luxury car tax and the end of car manufacturing in Australia.

"I was elected as part of the motoring enthusiasts party so that gives the perception I'm a one-trick pony but that's not true."

However, the father of five does admit he was scouted by the motoring party only months before the 2013 election, when it was first formed.

They found him through his YouTube channel - one video in which he was infamously filmed in a backyard kangaroo poo fight.

Senator Muir admits he did not expect to find himself in Canberra so soon.

"I thought, well, sure, nobody gets elected in their first election," he said.

And if you think he's the only car-loving federal pollie, you'd be wrong.

"You have no idea how many come up to me - `I ride bikes, I drive cars'," Senator Muir said.

Although no-one will top his enthusiasm of course. They're "not probably to the extent I am," he added.
