'I am back': Pauline Hanson beams after almost 20 years out in the cold

A beaming Pauline Hanson enthused that she was "very excited" to be back in Canberra as she arrived at 'Senate School' with 13 other newly elected senators today.

The One Nation leader, wrapped snugly in a grey coat, was all smiles as she wandered past a scrum of media photographers at Parliament House.

Derryn Hinch, the controversial media personality, was among the new crop of Senators. Aged 72, Hinch sets a new record for the oldest politician to be elected to either house.

"I am back," was Hanson's triumphant call to reporters, saying she was "very excited [and] very honoured" to return, after almost 20 years away from the political spotlight.

Asked about her tense relationship with senator Hinch, Hanson said she wasn't happy about some comments he'd made about her.

"Senate School" is the term affectionately given to a three-day induction course designed to guide new senators around Canberra's halls of power and political processes.

Hanson has of course been here before. It will also be familiar ground for Labor Senator Don Farrell and Louise Pratt, who have both previously served in the Upper House.
