Man charged over 'hit and run' as young woman fights for life

A man has been charged following an alleged hit and run that left a 27-year-old woman in a critical condition yesterday. 

CCTV taken on Campbell Street in Bowen Hills shows a woman, identified as Iuliana Stevenson, being struck by a pettibone vehicle, which is used to lay railway track, as she crosses an intersection around 1am.

Ms Stevenson can be seen crumpling to the ground, before the pettibone stops and then drives off. Bystanders can then be seen racing over to check on Ms Stevenson.

She was taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital where she remains in a critical condition with significant head injuries.

The 58-year-old alleged driver has since been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing grievous bodily harm with callous disregard. 

Ms Stevenson – a business development executive at a south Brisbane law firm described by one former boss as a "rising star" –underwent emergency surgery yesterday and is still in a critical condition.

Queensland Rail chief executive Nick Easy has called the collision “a tragic incident” and said the organisation is doing its best to assist emergency services with their inquiries.

The man will face court later this month.
