Environment Minister Greg Hunt has been dubbed the "best minister in the world" at an international summit.

Mr Hunt was given the award at the World Government Summit in Dubai overnight for his role in reducing carbon emissions by 93 million tonnes.

He told the summit he was deeply humbled by the honour.

The 2016 award is the first time it has been granted and will become annual fixture of the summit.

It aims to recognise ministers "who lead quality successful initiatives at the public sector [level] that serve the needs of citizens", according to the World Government Summit website.

Nominations came from more than 80 countries.

Thomson Reuters managed the identification of candidates and judges, and collected the scores.

The annual summit is an initiative of the United Arab Emirates government.

Greens MP Adam Bandt queried whether Mr Hunt deserved the award.

"He has done precious little to tackle climate change," he told reporters in Canberra.
