Hundreds turn up to support dying dog on final beach walk

An elderly dog whose owner reached out to social media for support has been joined by hundreds of dog-walkers for a final — but very special — beach walk.

UK owner Mark Woods launched a Facebook event inviting local members of the public to join him for the walk at Porth Beach in Newquay, Cornwall on November 12, after deciding to put his 18-year-old whippet down.

Carrying Walnut in a blanket, Mr Woods headed down to the beach, where he and his beloved dog were greeted by countless well-wishers for a stroll and a dip in the water.

Walnut died hours later in the presence of his family and three other whippets, “Charlie”, “Monty” and “Nelson”, Mr Woods confirmed in a Facebook post hours later. 

"He went very quickly and in my arms,” Mr Woods wrote.

"Thank you to the hundreds of people that (sic) attended this walk this morning and to all those that had their own walks with their beloved pets at 9.30am all around the world.

"I also want to thank the wonderful people of Newquay for their support which I will never forget as long as I live. God bless you all.”
