Roads turned into rivers and homes damaged as flash flooding hits Victoria

Flash flooding has wreaked havoc across Victoria with the Mornington Peninsula, where water inundated homes and blocked roads, among the hardest-hit regions.

Heavy rain and storms overnight led to flash flooding and trees down across Victoria, with more than 500 Victorians having to call for help from emergency services.

Mount Martha, Mornington and Hastings were worst hit by the large "storm cell", which was lashed with 40mm to 50mm of rain, in just a couple of hours.

State Emergency Service (SES) chief Tim Wiebusch warned the "flood emergency was still far from over".

"SES volunteers and emergency services are still in the area, accessing those impacts and still responding to 80 requests for assistance," he said.

"We do know that there are seven homes in the Blairgowrie area that have been flooded above the floor level and will have families relocated from them."

Major to moderate flood warnings are in place state, particularly for communities along the Murray River near Echuca and around Bacchus Marsh and Beaufort, west of Melbourne.

The SES received a massive 550 calls for assistance in the 24 hours to 8am today, including 318 for flooding incidents, 104 for fallen trees, and 44 for building damage.

Many drivers found themselves stuck in floodwaters across Melbourne early on Monday, while homes were also inundated by the sudden rainfall.

Mornington Peninsula resident Summer Wilson told Today she was shocked to find her property flooded early this morning.

"At 5am this morning I woke up to go to the gym and I was just hit with such large amounts of water at my doorstep. It was crazy," she said.

Wilson said she tried to drive through the waters to the gym and became stranded not far from her home.

She said she had not realised how deep the water was.

Flash flooding has also inundated roads in Melbourne's west, with trucks and cars seen stuck on major routes in Derrimut and Hoppers Crossing.

With rain expected to continue, drivers are being warned never to enter floodwaters.
