Humpbacks to visit Sydney on southern migration

It’s life in the slow lane: an inquisitive humpback lazily nose-diving around a whale-watching boat about 10km off Sydney.

It was an amazing display for those on-board, with the immense creature going through a slow-motion underwater ballet routine - rising above the surface, sometimes simply nosing up into the air, then sinking back down.

We see this twice a year. First, the northbound journey in autumn, and now we’re about to see the spring journey as the humpbacks cruise down the coat, headed back to the Antarctic for summer.

But we have to be careful, for their sake.

Boat-owners wanting an experience like this are warned not to go too close.

Rather, they should wait and hope the whale comes to them.
