Truck driver dies, another freed after seven hours following 'horrendous' crash on Hume Highway

Emergency services worked for seven hours to free a truck driver who was trapped after a 'horrendous' crash between two trucks on the Hume Highway in the NSW Southern Tablelands.

Emergency services were called to the Hume Highway about 1.15am today after reports of a crash about 35km east of Yass near Pedell Lane in Gunning.

At the scene, police found that a B-double truck had left the road and rolled before a second B-double truck crashed into it from behind.

The 30-year-old driver of one of the trucks died at the scene, while a second driver was taken to hospital in a critical condition.

It took emergency crews seven hours to cut the second driver out of the truck's cabin before he could be airlifted to Canberra Hospital.

Fire and Rescue crews told 9News he had been impaled in the collision.

NSW Police Inspector David Cowell called the scene horrendous.

"It is a horrendous and devastating scene....the wreckage from the crash is strewn for 100 metres," he said.

All southbound traffic was diverted to the Federal and Barton Highways.

A crime scene has been set up while police investigate the circumstances of the crash.

A report into the truck driver's death will be prepared for the coroner.

His death is the 34th on NSW roads this year.
