Feeding your whole family for just $50 per week sounds impossible, but a mum from Gympie in Queensland has proven it can be done.

Ms Allen has developed  a cult-like following online, and told 9NEWS others can significantly cut your grocery bill.

"I had to do it for four years, if I wanted to I still can. Everyone can, but that’s not to say ‘it’s easy’," she said.

Her favourite meals that come in at less than a dollar include a lunch of pumpkin scones with baked beans and melted cheese, with a side of salad.

"It’s a cheap easy nutritious meal that’s under one dollar per serve,” she said.

Ms Allen recommended buying generic brand staple items, including olive oil and tinned tuna.

She relies on frozen vegetables to help bulk up meals.

When grocery shopping, Ms Allen’s golden rule is to stick to the outside aisles so you're not tempted by unnecessary items such as chocolate and biscuits.

Ms Allen has just released her third book, titled The $50 Weekly Shop Weekday Dinners.
