How police are using 'supercams' to catch texting drivers

Drivers in Victoria among the first to be caught using their phones at the wheel by brand new supercam technology.

Using a red-light-style camera, which can clearly snap images of motorists texting illegally, has been tested by VicRoads, the Department of Justice and Victoria Police.

More than 270 drivers were detected on their phones along one lane of the Eastern Freeway over a five-hour period.

While more than 1000 drivers were detected on their phones along three-lanes of CityLink over a nine-hour period.

It also picked up disturbing behaviour including drivers using both hands to text, some using multiple phones, and some using their iPads.

However, despite this, authorities say there are no current plans of rolling out the new technology.
