How one family fell in love with Peter Overton

It was an interview that would forge a bond between reporter and family, leaving a legacy long after the story was broadcast.  

Peter Overton’s 2008 "The Power of Love" feature for 60 Minutes focused on the plight of six-year-old Olivia Lambert, who suffered from a very rare and aggressive form of childhood cancer neuroblastoma.

Neuroblastoma is a rare disease with about 40 children diagnosed each year in Australia.  

With an average survival rate of just 40 percent, the tumour is most commonly found in the abdomen of children aged five years or younger.

Olivia was diagnosed with stage four of the deadly disease in 2006, aged just four.

"It's a story I will always remember for not only Kirsty and James’ incredible strength as they watched their little girl battle incredible odds, but also how Olivia was wise beyond her years," Overton said.

In such a testing and emotional period for the Lambert family, Olivia’s mother Kirsty said Overton earned their trust and respect.

"To him (Peter) we weren’t just a story, he genuinely cared about our family," she said.

"He was empathetic, generous, supportive. He means what he says. He’s true to his word.

"And he’s been around for many years and supported our family and he always shows an interest and concern for each and every one of us."

Olivia lost her courageous six-year battle in August 2012. The Lamberts set up a foundation to help other families dealing with this very aggressive cancer, and Overton pledged his support.

"The family asked me to be a patron of the Olivia Lambert Foundation which I took with great honour and we raised good money to support other families like the Lambert family who went through such a challenging time and ultimately lost their little girl," he said.
