Hoverboard caused devastating fire that destroyed family home in Marayong, Sydney

Investigators believe a faulty hoverboard sparked a fire that destroyed a family home in Sydney’s west last night.

The Marayong family were alerted to the blaze by their smoke alarm, and their home was completely alight by the time they were able to escape.

“I came out to the lounge room, the flames were up and by the time we all ran out the back door the whole house was alight”  victim Violeta Stojanovska said.

The charred hoverboard was found where it had been left to charge, with investigators confirming it was the toy that ignited the blaze.

“Make sure that you are home and observing these devices when they are on charge,” NSW Fire and Rescue investigator Michael Forbes said.

The ACCC consumer watchdog is investigating hoverboards amid questions about the need for them to be regulated in Australia.

That is of little consolation for the Stojanovska family, who could only watch as their home of 16 years was destroyed.

“Now I dont know where I can go, I dont know where I can go to live now, no room no nothing,” Simon Stojanovska said.

Friends have set up a fundraiser for the Stojanovska family via the YouCaring website.
