House of Reps to sit extra day to debate migration law changes

Politicians preparing to head off on holidays will stay back an extra day to approve a bill passed in the early hours this morning.

Thursday was the last sitting day of the year but MPs were told they'd have to turn up the next day to debate the federal government's migration legislation.

The controversial bill, which includes the reintroduction of temporary protection visas, passed the Senate with crossbench support after a marathon debate.

Leader of the House Christopher Pyne said he hoped for a speedy vote on amendments to the bill so that MPs could jet off home for their two-month break.
