Sydney hospital carparks bringing in millions from patients

Patients at Sydney’s major hospitals are up in arms over exorbitant parking costs, which bring in up to $28 million a year.

At Camperdown’s RPA Medical Centre, the secure parking station costs $39 for two hours – more expensive than the airport rate of $24.50.

NSW Health Figures have revealed carpark revenue totaled $28m last year, up $4m on the previous 12 months.

However, that money is not directed back into hospitals but used to build and maintain more carparks, many of which are leased to private operators.

James Butler from the Western Sydney Cancer Advocacy Network said the cost for a cancer patient making regular trips to the hospital could reach hundreds of dollars.

There is little consistency across Sydney, with Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital charging $10 for two hours, compared to $16.80 at St George Hospital.

Government policy states hospitals set parking cost to encourage people to take public transport.

However, it is not an option for many patients who need to disembark close to the hospital doors.

To reduce the cost, some patients can apply for subsidies, while most hospitals also have discounted parking for carers.
