Hopes CCTV will combat Sydney violence

Sydney's lord mayor says she hopes 10 new CCTV cameras at nightspots around Surry Hills, Kings Cross and the CBD will cut violence.

The rollout will bring the number of cameras operating across the City of Sydney to 98 and follows consultation with police, residents, businesses and the Thomas Kelly Foundation, set up by the family of the teenage one-punch victim.

"We want the city to be an open, inclusive place where people feel safe and welcome at all hours," Lord Mayor Clover Moore said on Thursday.

"Sydney's late-night precincts face a range of complex challenges that require long-term investment from all levels of government and we're committed to taking action wherever we can."

The new cameras will be monitored 24 hours a day at the city's Security and Emergency Operations Centre at Town Hall.

The NSW government has introduced eight-year minimum mandatory sentencing laws for fatal one-punch assaults if alcohol or drugs are involved and has also imposed 1.30am lock-outs and 3am last-drinks rules at inner Sydney bars.

The measures followed public outrage over serious drunken assaults, including the deaths of 18-year-olds Thomas Kelly and Daniel Christie in separate one-punch assaults in Kings Cross.
