A woman has discovered the remains believed to belong to an elderly fisherman missing from the coast of Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula.

Yik Sua Hong was alone while casting a line off the rocks at Blairgowrie Back Beach on October 28.

When he didn't return to his Wantirna home for dinner, his wife raised the alarm.

Yesterday a woman walking along Gunnamatta beach about 11.40am located suspected human remains, police said in a statement this afternoon.

The scene continues to be examined by investigators, while the remains are taken to the Coroners Court to be forensically tested.

It comes after the 78-year-old's son found his silver Toyota in the car park, but there was no sign of the grandfather.

Mr Hong was previously described as an experienced fisherman who regularly fishes off the rocks at Blairgowrie, but was known not to use a life jacket.
