Hong Kong closes border entry points

Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam has announced the closure of four additional border control points joining Hong Kong and Mainland China in order to cut traffic that critics say is leaving Hong Kong open to the spread of a deadly Coronavirus.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday afternoon, Lam said that the Zhuhai Macao Bridge, the Shenzhenbei crossing and a limited number of flights would continue to operate while all other control points would be closed.

Lam said that a strike by over 1,000 medical workers earlier in the day had not influenced her government's decision to further tighten the borders. Commenting on the strike Lam said: "Those who resort to extreme measures are not going to get anywhere. We have to look at the needs of overall interests of residents. I cannot approve of such actions."

Both pro-democracy and pro-Beijing lawmakers have come together in a rare instance of agreement to urge Lam and her cabinet to implement a complete border closure to prevent the spread of the disease.
