Halloween home invaders in onesies terrify family after getting ‘wrong house’

A relative of a Sydney family who were tied up and robbed by armed home invaders in Halloween costumes overnight says they got the wrong house.

The family were inside their home on Oxford Street in Belmore around 10pm yesterday when four men, armed with a gun and a metal pole, broke in.

The men, dressed in costume onesies, threatened the family – including an elderly couple and two sisters aged 15 and 18 - tying them up with television cables.

At one stage they forced one of the sister to show them around the house, looking for valuables.

The four men eventually fled the scene and the family managed to untie themselves and called police who attended the home and established a crime scene. 

The elder sister of the teenagers, Helen Nguyen, involved in the invasion has spoken with reporters, saying the four men targeted her family by mistake.

“They did say that they had the wrong house,” Ms Nguyen told reporters this morning.

“Because they were after a Buddhist family apparently.

“After they noticed that we were Christian they were arguing to themselves like, ‘Oh hey we have the wrong house, what the f—k, are we being set up?’

“They kind of apologised to my sister like ‘oh sorry we got the wrong house’.”

Ms Nguyen added that the family was also the subject of an attack on Saturday night which she believes is connected to last night’s invasion.

“On Saturday night we had an attempted attack, I think,” she said.

“Our electricity turned off (and) as someone went to look at the electricity box four men came charging towards the person, as we all screamed for help they ran off.

“We don’t think it’s a coincidence.”

Ms Nguyen said her grandparents were terrified during last night's invasion attack because they can’t speak English and didn’t know what was happening.

“They were threatening them and my grandparents couldn’t understand what was going on,” she said.

“They were sleeping… just to have like weapons in their face when they woke up was…pretty bad.”

Ms Nguyen said her family is “all shaken up”.

“It’s a terrifying ordeal to come home to know that your sisters, especially younger sisters, have been attacked,” she said.

Police have established a crime scene at the home and are searching for the four suspects.
