Police investigate after man drowns in Hobart wharf

Police are investigating after a 27-year-old man drowned at a wharf in Hobart's CBD last night.

Emergency services were called to Princes Wharf 1 about 10pm following reports a man and a woman had fallen into the water.

The woman managed to swim to a nearby ladder, climb out of the water and raise the alarm, Detective Inspector David Gill said.

"The man, who could not swim, struggled to stay on the surface," he said.

"Two passing members of the public initially entered the water to help the man, with police attending shortly afterwards finding all three men struggling."

Three officers entered the water and pulled the man onto the rear deck of a police vessel.

The two members of the public were able to climb out using a nearby ladder.

More police and paramedics soon arrived at the scene and medical assistance was provided.

"Sadly the man could not be revived," Gill said.

"We're in the process of notifying next of kin so we're unable to provide further details about the victim at this stage."

Gill recognised the "heroic efforts" of members of the public who entered the water to rescue the man.

Police are investigating the matter.

Initial inquiries have revealed there were a number of people in the area at the time of the drowning, including people fishing.
