HMAS Sydney makes last voyage

After 32 years of service with the Royal Australian Navy, HMAS Sydney has made its final entry into its namesake city.

The guided missile frigate, which will be decommissioned at the end of this year, passed through Sydney Heads just after 8.30am on Friday and then berthed at Garden Island.

Sydney's commanding officer Karl Brinckmann said a decommissioning pennant was flown as the ship entered the harbour.

"It's 138 metres in length, which is significant because it's the length of the ship," Commander Brinckmann told ABC radio.

At Garden Island, the ship will support technical training courses until its decommissioning at the end of the year.

Sydney saw active service in Kuwait and East Timor, and has undertaken deployments to the Middle East.
