Another Australian navy ship has departed for the Middle East to disrupt the drug trade which funds terror groups.

Defence Minister Kevin Andrews says HMAS Melbourne will relieve HMAS Newcastle in maintaining Australia's presence in the region, conducting counter-terrorism and counter piracy operations as well as intercepting narcotics.

He farewelled the 230-strong crew on Sunday and thanked them for their contribution to global security.
