Gold Coast driver sought by police after boy hit

Police believe an eight-year-old boy struck by a car on the Gold Coast is "very lucky" to have avoided serious injury as the hunt continues for the driver of the vehicle.

The boy was crossing an intersection at Benowa around 8.15am on Thursday morning on a scooter when he was struck by a turning orange hatchback.

Footage of the incident shows the car stopping briefly, only to drive off when the boy limps past the car.

Passers-by assisted the boy and called an ambulance, and the child taken to hospital for treatment on a leg injury.

"Very lucky it could have been much worse," Acting Senior Sergeant Josh Gunter said.

Snr Sgt Gunter has urged the driver to come forward, and reminded motorists its their responsibility to swap details following a traffic incident even if the other party is a child.

"I would suggest that you must provide assistance to a pedestrian that has been struck by the vehicle, especially if it's a child," he said.

Snr Sgt Gunter said the driver was needed to provide their version of events to ensure police attain the full story behind the accident and its aftermath.

Police are also calling for any witnesses to the incident or those with dash cam footage to contact them.
