One of Victoria's oldest pubs has burned to the ground.

The Port Albert Hotel, near Wilsons Promontory in the state's southeast, caught fire on Monday evening.

At least a dozen fire trucks battled the blaze for an hour-and-a-half before bringing it under control, a CFA spokesman said.

Firefighters were able to stop the intense fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

The coastal hotel, built mainly of timber, was first licensed in 1842.

It's not known yet how the fire started.
