A class action over a defective hip implant affecting more than 1700 Australians has been settled for $250 million, subject to court approval.

A conditional agreement was reached in Sydney with pharmaceutical distributor Johnson & Johnson and UK-based manufacturer DePuy International Ltd, representatives from Shine Lawyers and Maurice Blackburn announced on Thursday.

The product class action began in 2011 and is the largest to be settled in Australian history.
