High winds to buffet Victoria again

Strong winds will again lash Victoria as a cold front approaches the state on Friday.

A week of stormy weather saw trees and power lines brought down and thousands go without power.

Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Terry Ryan says strong northerly winds will build through Friday morning ahead of a cold front that will pass through Victoria on Saturday.

"We're expecting wind gusts up to 100km/h in southern and mountain districts and up to 120km/h in alpine areas," Mr Ryan said.

Tuesday's winds hit Melbourne's CBD, while Thursday's winds mainly battered southern Victoria.

Police and Emergency Services Minister Kim Wells warned Victorians to stay alert as the weather deteriorates.

"Friday won't be a great day. (But) we're being told the intensity of the wind is not going to be as bad as it was on Tuesday," he said.
