Retired major general and NSW Liberals candidate Jim Molan is expected to be elected to the Senate on Wednesday when a special count is conducted by the electoral commission.

The High Court on Monday ordered that the recount take place after Hollie Hughes was disqualified from taking up the seat because she held a post with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

Ms Hughes had been due to take up the seat vacated by former minister Fiona Nash, who was herself disqualified over her dual citizenship.
