Hey Dad! actor's daughter comes to defence

The daughter of Hey Dad! actor Robert Hughes has defended her father, saying he never swam or walked around naked.

She has also denied that one of the alleged victims of her father's abuse told her: "Your dad makes me do things".

On the same day her mother Robyn Gardiner finished giving evidence at the trial of 65-year-old Hughes, Jessica Hughes also spoke in his defence.

The 36-year-old knew a number of the alleged victims when she was a young girl herself.

But Ms Hughes told Sydney's District Court on Wednesday that she never saw her father exposing his penis, swimming naked in a neighbour's pool or any other "inappropriate" behaviour.

Previous witness have accused Hughes of swimming naked and exposing himself.

When crown prosecutor Gina O'Rourke quizzed her on her memory when she was between five and eight years old, she said: "I remember some things very well and other things not at all".

But she denied one of the alleged victims told her, "Your dad makes me do things".

"I believe I would have had some recollection of something that would have felt uncomfortable," Ms Hughes said.

Ms Hughes was the last witness in her father's defence case.

Hughes has pleaded not guilty to 11 sexual and indecent assault charges stemming from allegations he abused five girls in the 1980s and 90s.

On Wednesday, Ms O'Rourke recalled the mother of one of the women who alleges she was sexually abused by Hughes when she was 11 years old.

The court has heard Hughes and Ms Gardiner were friends with the girl's parents and regularly visited their Sydney home for barbecues and parties.

That friendship is alleged to have ended after the daughter went to her mother with allegations of abuse at the hands of Hughes.

Ms Gardiner said the friendship broke down because the mother was interested in starting a lesbian affair with her.

On Wednesday, the woman, who cannot be named, told Hughes's lawyer Greg Walsh it was "absolute rubbish".

Meanwhile, a neighbour of Hughes in the 1980s said she had told Ms Gardiner of another mother's allegations that Hughes had sexually abused her young daughter.

"She (Ms Gardiner) said `That's ridiculous, Robert would not do a thing like that'," the woman told the court.

The crown and defence are expected to begin summing up on Thursday.
