Witnesses stopped alleged drug-driver from leaving scene of crash

Bystanders stepped in to stop an alleged drug-driver from leaving the scene of a head-on Gold Coast collision that injured a mother and two young girls today.

The crash happened while the accused man, aged 30, was allegedly driving down the wrong side of the Gold Coast Highway at Southport, about 9.15am.

The occupants of the 4WD he crashed into – a 32-year-old woman and two girls, aged eight and four – suffered minor injuries.

Witnesses said the man had tried to leave the scene before an informal posse worked to stop him.

"I actually saw him walking around the car and then we saw him throw a bottle of vodka on the ground and he was trying to escape," one woman said.

At that point, a security guard stepped in and told the man not to leave.

"Do no leave the scene or I will detain you. Walk back now," he was heard saying.

The Broadwater Park Security guard, Chris Harris, later told 9NEWS it seemed like the right thing to do.

"I just tried to get him into the park as much as possible so he couldn't get into a car and run off," he said.

Another witness, Brad Greenwell, said a group of people worked to stop the accused man. 

"I just didn't want him to run off after what he'd caused. He deserves everything he's got coming to him in my opinion," he said.

Firefighters comforted the injured girls with a trauma teddy, before they and their mother were taken away for treatment.

The male driver was arrested at the scene and has since been charged with driving on drugs and without a licence.

Witnesses said he had been driving on the wrong side of the road for about 300m.

"There was no sign of him stopping, nothing. He just continued coming down the wrong side of the road," one woman said.

He has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, driving while a relevant drug is present in the blood, and unlicensed driving.

He is expected to face the Southport Magistrates Court on August 3.
