A Michelin-quality meal for under ten dollars might sound too good to be true, but a new restaurant in Melbourne says it can do just that.

Singapore-based eatery Hawker Chan opened its doors in Melbourne's CBD to lengthy queues today, with diners putting the hype to the test.

The signature dish - the soya chicken rice - has earned Chef Chan Hon Meng a single Michelin star for two years running.

Prices for the meal start at six dollars eighty – a characteristic designed to go hand-in-hand with the hawker-style atmosphere.

It’s the first time the restaurant has gone offshore.

One of the restaurant’s quirks is a locked room – unable to be seen from the outside – where the chef works alone to mix the signature soy marinade, keeping the recipe away from prying eyes.

The company that brought the restaurant to Melbourne is the same one behind the introduction of Tim Ho Wan into the bustling Bourke Street Precinct.

Hersing Culinary owns the franchising rights to the Hong Kong-based dim-sum chain across the Asia-Pacific.
