Have exit plan, Bishop urges travellers

Australians overseas visiting mass gatherings such as Christmas markets should have an exit plan in the event of a terror attack, Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says.

Her warning comes after the Islamic State group reportedly claiming responsibility for the Berlin truck attack, which left at least 12 people dead.

"We ask people to take care, to take the normal precautions but if they are visiting places like a Christmas market to ensure that they have an exit plan worked out should there be a security incident of this type or worse," Ms Bishop told the Nine Network on Wednesday.

Ms Bishop said the attack on the Christmas market in Berlin had all the hallmarks of a terror event, although German authorities haven't yet confirmed a motive.

"We stand with the German people and the German government in the fight against terrorism," she said.

The minister insisted the government was doing all it can to give law enforcement bodies the resources they need.

But she said no government could give a guarantee there wouldn't be a terror event.

Australia's terror threat level remains at probable, with 11 attacks thwarted in Australia over the past two-and-a-half years, Ms Bishop said.
