Iconic Rundle Mall Harris Scarfe store to close in weeks

Staff at the Harris Scarfe store in Adelaide's Rundle Mall will soon be out of a job after the iconic Australian retail chain was placed into receivership last month.

The Rundle Mall store will close in coming weeks, with affected staff being told today.

An estimated 60 employees at the store will lose their jobs when the store closes next month.

Harris Scarfe was first established on Adelaide's Hindley Street over 170 years ago with many more stores opening across Australia over the years.

Deloitte, the receivers overseeing the closures, had estimated 27 of the company's 66 stores would close across the country, although none of the other eight stores in SA are believed to be at risk at this stage.

The company also has stores in Arndale, Gepps Cross, Kilkenny, Tea Tree Plaza, Oaklands Park, West Lakes, Elizabeth and Noarlunga, as well as across Australia.

Harris Scarfe was placed into administration in December last year, by Allegro Funds, which took ownership of it just days before.

With the company an estimated $160 million in debt to creditors, Deloitte is attempting to sell the business.

The Rundle Mall store was demolished in 2013 and rebuilt in Rundle Place, however the new look was not enough to draw customers back in.
