Gunman on the run after man shot in street

Police a hunting a murderer who shot a man dead in Unanderra, south of Wollongong,  in the early hours of this morning. 

Paramedics and police responded to calls of shots being fired on Carr Parade, around 2.15 this morning. 

Upon arrival they discovered a 32 year old man unconscious on the curb - suffering multiple gun-shot wounds. 

They tried to revive him, conducting CPR for almost an hour, but were unsuccessful. 

Shocked neighbours say they were startled awake by the sounds of two loud bangs. 

Phil Walker walked outside to see an emergency situation unfolding on his door step. He said a distressed woman was crying out to the victim. 

" She was distraught and had blood all over her clothing, so she obviously found the man. " 

Today, detectives canvassed the area for clues. A parked car peppered with bullets was dusted for fingerprints and a number of casings seized as evidence. 

Lake Illawarra Police are following a number of inquiries and interviewing witnesses. 

Chief Inspector, Glen said it is terrible, " This sort of violence is not tolerated in the streets of the Illawarra. 

A burnt out car located in an empty reserve between home at Cordeaux Height could be key to finding the murderer.  The sedan was set alight only minutes after the drive-by shooting. 

Homeowner, David Davis was startled awake, capturing the moment it went up in flames. 

" There was a sudden boom and I opened my eyes and the bedroom was just red." 

This afternoon, extra police resources were brought in from Sydney to conduct a search line, where the car was abandoned. 

Detectives are still trying to piece together who was behind the wheel and what there motives were. However, fresh details have revealed the victim Nathan Costello has an extensive criminal history. 

He was recently released from jail for stealing a phone from a sex worker at a Wollongong brothel. 

More shockingly he was sentenced to 3 years imprisonment in 2012 for violently terrorising his partner, smashing her head into a concrete wall and smothering her with a pillow. 

Chief Inspector Broadhead confirming with 9 News he believes it was a targeted attack.
