Gunman on run near Sydney primary school

A gunman remains at large after a man was shot outside a western Sydney primary school on Friday morning.

St John Vianney Primary School was put in lockdown after the shooting at Pandora Street in Greenacre, about 9.20am.

The victim, believed to be in his mid 30s, was shot in the left knee and taken to hospital, police say.

The school lockdown was lifted just after 10.30am.

The school released a statement following the lockdown.

"Today at around 9.15am, a serious incident took place in a street adjoining St John Vianney Catholic Primary School Greenacre that resulted in a person receiving a gunshot wound. The children were in class at the time of the incident," a spokesperson said.

"Police were quickly on the scene. The school was immediately locked down and secured. The lockdown direction was lifted by police at around 10.30am.

"All members of the St John Vianney school community are safe and well."

Police have cordoned off a 100m stretch of Pandora Street.

Parents have been contacted about the incident and can collect their children, but the school day will continue as usual, Mr Rix said.

Counsellors will be provided for the students.
