Guard change at Infrastructure Australia

A former senior Liberal state politician has been appointed the new chairman of Infrastructure Australia as the national planning body undergoes controversial change.

Mark Birrell, who served almost two decades in Victorian parliament until 2002, will on Tuesday take over from Sir Rod Eddington, who takes up a role with the APEC Business Advisory Council.

A prime ministerial statement on Saturday said Tony Abbott requested Sir Rod's move and recommended Mr Birrell for the role.

"Mr Birrell has the expertise, energy and experience to lead Infrastructure Australia at a crucial time," Mr Abbott said.

Legislation before the Senate seeks to abolish the organisation's council and the position of current boss, Michael Deegan.

They will be replaced by a board and a chief executive officer.

Labor-appointed Mr Deegan has been critical of the coalition's planned overhaul.

Mr Abbott on Saturday championed the importance of Infrastructure Australia and its role in building a "strong and prosperous economy".

"Infrastructure Australia will be given a broader range of responsibilities and will be charged with developing a rolling 15-year infrastructure plan," the prime minister said.

After some six years as chairman, Sir Rod will in his new role be charged with promoting Australian business interests in the Asia and Pacific region.

"In this position he will advance Australia's trade and economic agenda," Mr Abbott said.
