Annual GST carve-up: Victoria, WA biggest winners while Queensland and NT lose out

Victoria and Western Australia are the biggest winners in the annual GST carve-up.

Treasurer Scott Morrison announced who will get what from the $65.8 billion funding pie before meeting his State counterparts later today.

The total amount is up $3.4 billion on last year.

Western Australia gets $1.8 billion more, after years of complaining that it has been treated unfairly, while Victoria will receive an extra $1 billion.

Most other states will receive similar funding to previous years, although Queensland loses $400 million and the Northern Territory $136 million.

Mr Morrison has promised further talks with the NT about possible additional help.

The carve-up is determined by the Commonwealth Grants Commission.

The formula used to share the pie is being reviewed by the Productivity Commission, with a report expected next month.

"It's not an easy issue," Mr Morrison said.

"It's not an easy issue but it does require a very patient and a good faith discussion about how we proceed," Mr Morrison said before the meeting.

The funds go towards the States' hospitals, schools, roads and infrastructure.

Labor leader Bill Shorten said the federal government had previously ignored WA's "legitimate complaint" about a shortfall in its GST cut.

"Mr Turnbull wants the various states and regions to engage in the 'hunger games' while he ... gives $65 billion to the top end of town," Mr Shorten said.
