A group of Indian nationals claiming to be journalists covering the Commonwealth Games have reportedly been detained at Brisbane International Airport.

The Courier-Mail reports Australian Border Force officers detained the group of nine this morning because their claim to be journalists was not considered genuine.

A 46-year-old man is due to face Brisbane Magistrates Court in relation to the incident today, charged with people smuggling and falsifying documents.

At an unrelated press conference in Brisbane, Queensland Deputy Police Commissioner Bob Gee confirmed an incident had taken place but would not go into specifics.

However he said it was proof "the system works" when it came to stopping illegal arrivals trying to use the Commonwealth Games as cover.

"I can't say any more than that because we're in a real live situation but what I can say is the system works and there is no threat to the Commonwealth Games," he said.

The Commonwealth Games start on the Gold Coast on April 4.
