Greste's legal battle in Egypt ends badly

PETER GRESTE'S LONG FIGHT TO CLEAR HIS NAME:

2013:

DECEMBER: Peter Greste and Al Jazeera colleagues Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed are arrested for broadcasting false news and supporting the blacklisted Muslim Brotherhood of ousted Islamist president Mohamed Morsi

2014:

JUNE: Greste and Fahmy found guilty and sentenced to seven years' jail, Mohamed gets 10-years, sparking international outrage and protests over press freedom in Egypt

2015:

JANUARY:

- Egypt's Supreme Court orders a retrial for the trio after questioning the integrity of their initial trial

- Greste's lawyers apply to the Egyptian government for his deportation

FEBRUARY:

- Despite the retrial, Greste is deported by the Egypt president under a new decree allowing him to expel foreign defendants convicted or accused of crimes

- An elated Greste arrives home having spent 400 days in a Cairo jail

- Fahmy and Mohamed initially remain in jail but are later released on bail pending the retrial

- Retrial begins in Greste's absence as he cannot return to Cairo

- Greste warns he could again be convicted of terrorism-related charges that could threaten his career as a foreign correspondent

JULY

- Retrial verdict scheduled for July 30 postponed until August 2

AUGUST

- Retrial verdict scheduled for August 2 postponed until August 29

- Court in Cairo sentences Greste, Fahmy and Mohammed to three years jail.
